Traffic Monitoring in Yelling

Introduction

The volume and speed of traffic on our High Street has always been seen as one of the major issues affecting Yelling villagers. In addition to the traffic calming measures introduced by Yelling Parish Council it has also promoted two schemes that monitor the traffic flow through our village. Regular reports of the data collected have been made both to the Parish Council and to various authorities in different forms; this page will allow everyone to see some of the more significant results, which will be updated as the months go by.

It is easy to see how the pandemic has significantly reduced the number of vehicles on our roads but unfortunately this has obscured the effects some local events may have had, such as the closure of Papworth Hospital, the opening of new sections of the A14, and frequent local road closures due to accidents or improvement works.

A dozen or so people have been involved in the traffic monitoring schemes but any errors in the figures, charts or text are my responsibility so please contact me for further information, corrections, comments, questions on bownassjohn@gmail.com

Report 9 May 2022

A second MVAS radar sign has been bought by the Parish Council (with the aid of a Cotton Windfarm grant) and is undergoing testing before full release. In the meantime some new charts are available showing traffic volumes and speeds before, during and after the covid shut- downs. Let me have your thoughts!

Report 23 April 2024

In the past week the A428 has been closed during the night with the inevitable increase in traffic through Yelling. The MVAS was sited at the east end of the village, monitoring traffic entering the village from the Papworth direction, and gives some interesting results. The chart shows the hourly flow throughout the 24 hours for the affected days (Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st April) compared to the average for the same days in the previous three weeks. The volume at 10 and 11 pm was twice the usual rush hour volume at nearly 200 vehicles/hour!

Report 25 July 2024 – Speedwatch Team

Data is from Speedwatch sessions monitoring eastbound traffic at some time between 7:00am and 9:00am, usually at the Village Hall.  Results are given for each quarter since the start of Yelling Speedwatch monitoring, and normalised for a 60 minute period (as the time on site varied) to give comparable figures.

In the pre-covid period of the chart (2015 Q2  – 2019 Q4): Volume/hr = 356 and 2.6% caught speeding (35mph and above). Peak was 505 vehicles averaged over 5 sessions in 2017 Q4.

During the pandemic (2020, 20221 and 2022), when sessions allowed: Volume/hr = 89 with 7.1% speeding

From the beginnng of 2023 to current date (25 July 2024): Volume/hr = 134 with 3.3% speeding. Peak since the pandemic was 190 in Q3 2023.
