GARDEN PARTY JULY 2014

The theme this year was Blooming Marvellous and the event certainly lived up to its title.  The sun shone and the garden at Home Farm Yelling looked splendid with a colourful array of flowers in full bloom. Even before the gates opened ladies were arriving wearing their summer finery, keen to find their favourite spot in the garden.  Soon, as more and more guests arrived, there was activity and chatter all around.  The nearly new stall and book stall attracted those keen to pick up a bargain, and the plant stall did well as ladies were inspired to create for themselves a garden to match their surroundings at  Home Farm.  The tombola had a distinctly floral theme and there was the usual raffle.

STEVINGTON MANOR HOUSE GARDEN

For our June meeting we gathered at 6pm and headed out of the village for our annual outing.  Travelling by minibus we were transported to Kathy Brown’s Manor House Garden at Stevington in Bedfordshire.  Kathy met our coach at the crossroads in the village and guided us up the winding driveway to our parking spot before giving us a more formal welcome and introduction to the garden and its hidden delights, such as the edible flowers border.  Alongside this, there was entertainment in the form of her two energetic terriers who laid on a lively display, competing with each other for ‘top dog’ status.  As we wandered round the garden admiring the planting and artistic features we were delighted to hear a distant cuckoo – a very rare event these days. It was a little too early in the evening to witness the owl swooping in over the meadow but the overall atmosphere was one of rural tranquillity.  We were then invited inside for refreshments (home-made cake, either Honey and Ginger, or Lemon and Lavender) and our usual monthly business meeting.

Houghton Mill

For our June meeting and annual outing, we took a step back in time by visiting this impressive water mill restored and run by the National Trust.  It was a fine, warm evening and we spent some time admiring the picturesque riverside setting and spotting wildlife.  We were treated to the unusual sight of a seal exploring the river close to the mill.  Once inside, we were given a tour of the mill in action and saw for ourselves how grain is transformed into stone-ground wholemeal flour. As well as discovering some interesting stories about the mill and its history, we tried out most of the hands-on exhibits.  By this time we were ready for our refreshments in the riverside tearoom and enjoyed sampling the scones made using Houghton Mill flour.  It was a rewarding trip and definitely a place to return to with our grandchildren.
